What does a Gasfitter (A) do?

Gasfitters mainly extend and repair gas mains, and install, repair and service pipes and fittings between mains and buildings.

- They determine the size and type of pipe, equipment, appliances and devices to use.
- They measure, cut, thread and assemble pipe.
- They install vents and flues and connect gas-consuming appliances such as ranges, dryers, barbecues, furnaces, boilers, space heaters, radiant and forced air heaters.
- They test and replace defective equipment or components.

What kind of person makes a good Gasfitter (A)?

How do I become a Gasfitter (A)?

There are two branches of Gasfitters in Alberta: Gasfitter (A) needs to apprentice for three years and Gasfitter (B) needs to apprentice for two years.

1. Find a company willing to take you as an apprentice
2. Register with AAIT (Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training)
3. Apprentice for 2/3 years, which includes 1500 hours of on the job training and 8 weeks of technical training at school each year.
4. Take the interprovincial Red Seal exam to become a registered Gasfitter.

Where does a Gasfitter (A) work?

Gasfitters are employed in the construction, manufacturing and utilities industries. 82 per cent of people employed as Gasfitters work in these industries.

How much does a Gasfitter (A) make?

On average, Gasfitters in Alberta make $28.87 an hour. That’s about $60,500 a year.

Apprentice Gasfitters (A) earn 50% of the journeyman wage in their first year, 60% in the second year and 80% in the third.
