The purpose of the E-Language Learning Adventure (ELLA) is to facilitate the acquisition of ESL by learners with a CLB level of 5-7, through their voluntary and flexible participation in an accessible online learning environment. ELLA aims to motivate learners by engaging all learning activities and granting them the opportunity to interact with the computer and other students, use their critical thinking skills and gain immediate contextualized feedback. Objectives of ELLA are to have learners gain a better understanding of language meaning, Canadian workplace culture and develop their communicative competencies for the Alberta work environment.
This program is designed to meet the needs of internationally educated professionals who have arrived in Canada between 0-5 years ago. The populations are of a CLB level 5-7, and therefore are capable of basic language skills; however, when they are confronted with more complex situations, such as workplace issues or relationship development, they have difficulty grasping the language or have not learned of basic workplace culture concepts. On the basis of this fact, these individuals are having difficulty attaining employment or transitioning to life in Alberta. Again, while this may be our target demographic, this project will not limit ELLA to people only from this demographic.
