Black Settlers of Alberta and Saskatchewan

Avatar has several projects on the go with the Black Settlers of Alberta and Saskatchewan Historical Society. Over the past couple of years we have recorded oral histories from some of the early settlers and their children. We accompanied some of the descendants down to Alabama for a reunion. We are also creating a BSAS virtual museum that will house a collection of digital stories and artifacts detailing the history of the black settlements here in Alberta.

The Black Settlers of Alberta and Saskatchewan Historical Society (BSAS) research, compile, coordinate and centralize the history of BSAS over the last century. All early Black Settlers and pioneers are dead and buried now... and buried with them their wonderful stories and rich histories.

The BSAS website pays tribute to all the Black Settlers who came before them by preserving their stories, and ultimately sharing their struggles and successes with all Canadians, thereby firmly establishing their place in Canadian History.

Change Your Lens - Little Buffalo

In January of 2011, Avatar Media partnered with Amnesty International and Dietlind Bork, a University of Alberta Masters student and went to to Little Buffalo, a small Lubicon Cree community in Northern Alberta. Jaro and Kendra headed north to teach a four-day workshop on digital storytelling. The workshop was delivered over two weekends. The first weekend consisted of teaching the theories behind story development, pre-production and production. Post-production followed the second weekend. Students chose the topic they wished to highlight and two documentaries were created: living in their community without running water and a dramatic short film about discrimination and acceptance. The water documentary was shown at the Global Youth Assembly conference in Edmonton in July, 2011.
